Google Drive
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive.appdata.
TextPad Privacy Policy
TextPad saves notes in your browser. Sync with a selected folder or Google Drive is optional. This page explains how the app stores and transfers data. Updated October 13, 2026.
Local note storage
A note's text, title, folder, and pinned state are saved in the browser's storage (IndexedDB), tied to the site's address and the browser profile. This is TextPad's primary storage and is used regardless of whether any sync is connected.
Optional folder on disk
If the user chooses a regular folder through the browser's own picker (Chrome or Edge), TextPad writes and reads its own textpad-sync subfolder for note versions and textpad-backups subfolder for backups. Delivering that folder to other devices is handled by a third-party cloud client the user has set up; TextPad is not involved in that transfer and does not know which service is used.
Optional Google Drive connection
If the user clicks "Connect Google Drive" and picks an account in Google's own window, TextPad is granted temporary access only to the appDataFolder area — a hidden, app-specific storage space that does not appear in the regular Google Drive interface and is not visible to the user's other apps.
- Requested permission. A single scope is used —
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive.appdata. No access is requested to any other files, Google Drive folders, or other Google services. - Access token storage. The access token is kept only in the browser tab's memory and is never written to disk. After a page reload, token expiration, or closing the tab, access is lost and the account must be reconnected through the same Google window.
- Data merging. When an account is connected, local notes from IndexedDB and notes already stored in the selected account's
appDataFolderare merged into one version history — the same way this happens with a regular folder on disk. - Different accounts need different browser profiles. TextPad does not separate data from different Google accounts within the same browser profile: connecting a different account in the same profile also merges its data with the local history. To keep separate, non-overlapping note sets for different accounts, use separate browser profiles.
- No client secret, no backend server. TextPad uses only a public OAuth client ID and Google Identity Services' browser token model. No client secret or refresh token is used or stored in the code — TextPad has no server of its own through which data or account credentials would pass.
- Data transfer direction. Requests to the Google Drive API go directly from the user's browser to Google's servers; the TextPad site is not an intermediary server for these requests and does not receive a copy of them.
Site hosting
The TextPad site is served as static files on Cloudflare Pages. The hosting infrastructure processes ordinary technical request data (such as IP address and headers) as part of running the hosting itself; TextPad as an application does not add its own analytics, trackers, or ad scripts on top of that.
Encryption
TextPad does not encrypt note text. Files in a selected local folder, in Google Drive's appDataFolder, and in backup JSON copies are stored as plain text. Any encryption provided by the disk or cloud service itself (if present) is handled by those services, not by the application.
Disconnecting and data deletion
The "Disconnect" action in the sync folder settings stops using the access token in that tab. It does not delete local notes in IndexedDB, files already written to the selected disk folder, or files in the connected Google account's appDataFolder — that data stays in place until the user removes it separately.
Deleting a note inside TextPad is irreversible for that note within the app's interface: the deletion record replaces the note's content with empty fields marked as deleted. This is not physical destruction of earlier data: older versions of the text that already reached the sync history, previously downloaded copies on other devices, or backup JSON files may still contain it. The separate "Clean up history" feature shrinks the working history in a connected folder or account, but it always creates an additional backup copy with the earlier texts first, and that backup is not deleted automatically.
Revoking access and managing app data
Disconnecting in TextPad is not the same as revoking the permission in Google itself. To fully revoke TextPad's access to a Google account, or to delete the data stored in the app's hidden storage area, use your Google account's security settings (the section listing third-party apps connected to the account) or the corresponding app data settings in Google Drive.
Support contact
The support contact address for questions about data access through Google is shown on Google's own consent screen when connecting an account (the Google OAuth consent screen), where Google displays the permissions TextPad is requesting.
